I agree with nevesis overall. I don't think it's mandatory that a drummer should reinvent himself just because others do. Dennis is already an individual person and player, and he seems to be staying an individual by the very fact he doesn't feel the need to follow so called set rules.
I love his playing. I've been listening to him on and off for years, and it's never struck me as something important that he should change. Not to me personally anyway. As has been said, his chops are so incredible what more chould he really do anyway?
Look at say, pit drummers and everyday session drummers. They learn their trade and work forevermore doing shows, recordings, etc. They're not required to reinvent themselves because they're simply doing the jobs that are asked of them. Dennis is basically doing the same thing, only he happens to be in the spotlight and not an unknown sideman. We only expect dennis to reinvent himself because he's famous, and everyone's talked about him and compared him to other drummers for years.
But that's just his fans and critics. For him, I guess he's just doing a job like those 'sidemen', (and a damned good one) , to keep himself working and having fun as well I imagine.
